The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake's water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health.
The reading and lecture are both about Salton sea which is a salty lake and its saltness is increasing day by day. The author of the reading feels that continuous evaporation of water and decline of rainfall this lake turn into date zone for several species and proposed some reason to solve the problem. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that it would be great if we save those species but proposals are unrealistic and impractical.
To begin with, the author argues that to remove the water by pumping and remaining in the lake will be salt. Therefore, the remaining salt will be removed and the lake will be filled back by water. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He states that it will produce a serious problem because water is removed by pumping and turns into steam and when it dissolves into the water which is unhealthy for species and birds. He also mentions that some substances are harmful as that species could not easily breath.
Second, the author suggests that to bring the water of the ocean which is less salty than the lake. As a result, the water of the lake and ocean dissolves with each other and reduce the saltiness. However, the lecturer rebuts by mentioning that to transfer the water required long-distance pipeline and heavy equipment which is very expensive. He also claims that the local government has not such kind of financial support to solve the problem.
Third, the author posits that divide the lake into several sections and restrict the flow of saltwater. Additionally, release the less salty water to the lake. In contrast, the lecturer position is that sometimes intense geological disaster happens like an earthquake. He also noted that the structure will be collapsed
and will cause a more complex situation.
