Sea otters

Essay topics:

Sea otters

The reading and the lecture are both about the causes of the decline in the sea otters along the western coast of North America. The author of the reading believes that the main reason why sea otters have disappeared is the pollution seas. Nevertheless, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the author in the passage. She uses the following evidence to indicate that it is quite possible that the main reason for the decline in their population comes from hunting by their natural predators, orcas.
First, the lecturer posits that the theory around the pollution issues is weak because no dead otters have been found along the coast. On one hand, the evidence concerning that nobody can find a dead otter weakened the argument of the author, on the other hand this evidence strengthens the hunting theory of the lecture.
Second, the lecture states that the disappearance of otters can be contributed to the change in eating patterns of the natural predator, the orcas, whose main source of food were whales. Accidentally, the population of whales declined due to human activities, which influenced the eating pattern of orcas. Predators were forced to hunt on smaller animals, such as sea otters. However, the author of the reading contends that populations of other species who dwell in the area, such as seals and sea lions, have also been declining. Since pollution affects the entire ecosystem, no species can escape the detrimental effect of the disaster.
Moreover, the professor puts forth the idea that the absence of the decrease in number of sea otters in certain areas could be explained by the inaccessibility of those areas to orcas. They are quite large and cannot get in the shallow and rocky places, where the population of the sea otters did not decline. This counters the author’s point, according to which the uneven decline in populations is attributed to the environmental reasons.
