Smart Cars
The passage and the lecture both addresses the advantages and disadvantages of smart cars. While the passage supports how smart cars will make our lives much more easier, the lecture talks about the negative aspects of smart cars. The main key points that are focused here are accidents, traffic jams and cost.
To begin with, the author of the passage indicates that since smart cars are equipped with sensors to make driving more easy and identify any obstacles on the path, it will prevent accidents. He also focuses on the point that humans do not concentrate much and hence computer control would be a better option. The lecture contradicts this by saying that no technology is completely error-free and in case of smart cars the accident will be pile ups which is much worse than the normal accidents.
Secondly the author mentions that there wont be any traffic jams as the cars can follow other car even at high speeds in the highways opposed to today where half of the time is spent in traffic. The lecture refutes this by saying that increased highway speeds will make a lot of drivers take this benefit which will again increase the traffic.
Finally, the passage mentions that smart cars will come with reduced costs since smart cars drives as per the program and the chances of the parts getting worn out is low. But the lecture claims that since the smart cars have global positioning system and extra sensors to keep track of the other cars the overall money spent on the cars will be same as that of the traditional cars.
