Summarise the points made in the lecture. Be sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage-four-day workweek.

The reading passage and the lecture are both about a four-day workweek. The lecturer completely refutes the arguments in the article. He argues that these explanations are faulty.

Firstly, the lecture states that a shortened workweek will not increase company profits. This is because company will spend much more money since hiring, health benefits, more computers and space to accommodate new employees will elevate company costs. This directly opposes the reading passage that states that the company profits will increase with the four-day workweek.

Secondly, the lecturer explains that the unemployment rate will not be reduced. Hiring a new employee for every four worker in a reduced workweek is costly for the company. Furthermore, the company could ask the employees to do the same work in a diminished time. Therefore, no additional job vacancy will be created and the job will be more unpleasant. This idea disagrees with the article that states that the unemployment rates will decline with the shortened workweek.

Finally, the lecturer believes that the free time generated by the reduced work hours present a lot of risks for the quality of life of the workers such as reduction in job stability. Moreover, it can harm the chances in enhance their careers and they can lose the opportunity of promotions because the company may prefer five-hour workweek workers for management positions. The reading passage, on the other hand, states that the free time will ameliorate the quality of life of employees since they will spend more time with their families.
