The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about whether the “let it burn” policy should be replaced by other policy or not. In the text, the author claims that there are some viable damages caused by the "let it burn policy". The lecturer challenges all the causes mentioned in the reading. She is of the opinion that none of these damages is destructive.

Firstly, the author states that Yellowstone fires lead to tremendous damage to park's trees and vegetation. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that Yellowstone fires not only was not destructive but also was creative. She argues that after the fires surpassed some new plant and crops such as new seeds were cultivated in those areas. Thus, this fire was essential for new vegetation appearance.

In addition, the reading passages proposes that Yellowstone fires were damaged to wildlife habitat and some small animals affected by these fires. The lecturer, on the other hand, asserts that these fires were very helpful for some animals such as rabbits. Furthermore, she says that these animals were able to find an ideal habitat for their thrive.

Eventually, the author holds the view that Yellowstone fires discouraged tourists to come to these areas and it has adverse impact on local economy. The speaker, however, rebuts this by asserting that there are other important factors such as lack of rainfall have been affecting on the number of yearly tourists. She believes that numerous tourists came to these areas for visiting.
