The main idea of both the reading and the talk is theories about the cause of the odd sounds. Considering this, the author provides three theories. The professor, on the other hand, categorically denies whatever mentioned in the passage through citing three reasons.
First, the author discusses that the strange sound was caused by orcas during a courtship ritual. The lecturer, nonetheless, rejects the author's view and illustrates that the whales live in the surface of the water whereas the submarine is in the deep ocean and cannot hear the sounds.
second, the passage argues another theory, saying the sounds were caused by giant squid. The professor, nevertheless, supports a contradictory view as compared to that presented in the reading; he describes that giant squids have always lived in the water, while the strange sound had been heard for only two decades. Therefore, there is no rational reason why the sound suddenly disappeared.
Third, The author of the reading passage states that the sound probably had an external source and caused by other submarines. However, the lecturer refutes it, saying that the sound changed its direction rapidly, while submarine could not able to do this quickly and with no engine noise. Furthermore, she asserts that even today it is impossible to make that kind of submarine.
All in all, the professor completely casts doubt on the theories which mentioned in the passage and rejects them.
