The reading and the lecturer both discuss the use of plants that are genetically modified. The author of the reading states that they bring a number of benefits and gives three reasons of support. The lecturer, on the other hand, rejects each claim made in the article and states that these plants have serious problems for natural trees.
First off, the reading says that since these genetically modified trees are developed for harsh conditions, they are able to survive better than natural trees. The speaker, however, claims that they are designed for one specific condition whereas there are plenty of climate conditions in nature. In case of facing a new condition or experiencing climate change, they will be wiped out.
Secondly, the article points out that these trees provide farmers with economic benefits. Since they grow faster, yield more products and can survive better; farmers can get faster and better returns. The professor, on the contrary, points out that they cost more to farmers. Their seeds are expensive and, according to the law, you have to pay to the companies for harvesting them.
Lastly, according to the passage, they help wild trees to survive since these trees grow faster so; they would gratify the need of wood. The lecturer refutes this by saying that these trees grow more aggressively and compete with wild trees for natural sources such as water or soil nutrients. As a result, they cause more damages to wild trees.
