TORREYA TAXIFOLYA
The reading provides three solutions to protect the Torreya Taxifolia evergreen tree from danger of extinction. However, the lecture strongly challenges the solutions for the following reasons
First, the reading suggests replanting the Torreya in its original areas in the northern of Florida where its specific microclimate exists , meanwhile the lecture claims that its specific microclimate had changed due to global warming that lead to warmer climate and the area became dry because water supply drained. Consequently the first solution is not valid.
Second, the reading offers another solution to replant Torreya further north from its original microclimate, where the climate is cooler and will ensure higher survival chance for Torreya. The reading however disagrees with this solution giving an example of black locust tree. When they replanted this tree it grew quickly and spread widely that it endangered the already plants and trees that were there, these plants and trees were already endangered with extinction. The lecture believes they eventually created more problems this way.
Last but not least, the reading mentions relocating Torreya from wild to research centers could be a solution. for instance, they will preserve Torreya and scientists would be able to closely monitor it and study it. The lecture however believes that the trees need to be in a big population and genetically diverse to resist a disease. consequently, the research centers are not big enough to accommodate big population. The third solution therefore is not well founded.
