First, the article debates about the Chevalier de Senigalt memoir and states that it's not accurate enough and most of his memoir is made up to create this atmosphere in which he had an exciting life and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that no memoir is accurate completely but Chevalier memoir is a reliable source and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading claims that when he was living in Switzerland, he wasn't affluent as he asserts, and he was in debt to a Swiss merchant and it is contrary with the contends which say he was affluent. The professor refutes this point by saying that he spent a huge amount of money on parties and he had to sell properties. She states that by the same token he needs time gap to change assets to money and it doesn't mean he was poor.
Second, the article posits that critics think that his conversations with Voltaire are not accurate because he wrote them many years after their meetings and no one can remember conversations so accurate many years later. However, the professor says that he had this habit which writes all of his conversations in the night. She states he wrote all of his conversations with Voltaire and kept it for many years even people who lived with him confirmed this point about him.
Third, the reading says that the escape of Chevalier from Venice prison was made up to make his memoir interesting and in reality, he used his connections to offer a bribe and escape from prison. The professor opposes this point by explaining in that prison many other persons with more connection couldn't escape with bribery. She explains that they found some documents that show the roof of his cell has been repaired and it proves his escape which he explained in the memoir.
