The reading and the lecture are both about change from working five days to four days per week in the U.S.A. The author of the reading believes that the option of working four days per week with 80 percent of pay will benefits the economy of country, individual and companies also. However, the lecture casts doubt the claims made in the article. He thinks that none of those reasons are convincing.
First of all, the author of the reading points out that working four days per week will profit companies because workers will be more alert, therefore, they make fewer mistakes in their jobs. This point is challenged by the lecture. He says that it does not benefit companies. In contrast, the companies have to hire more workers and pay more money for training them as well as for offices and computers.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that if workers work four days a week, they will help to reduce the unemployment rate of their country, because the jobs of the rest of week will be done by others people. The lecture rebuts this argument that even though the time of working is shorten, companies usually arrange the works for workers who work four days per week the same who work five days per week. Therefore, no job is available to others.
Finally, the author of the reading states that working four days per week will be better for individual, because they will have more leisure time for their interest and their families. The lecture on the other hand, opposes this point that working four days per week will reduce the quality of life of people, because they do not have enough time to improve their skills in their jobs and they may lose their job due to fact that company would like to hire people who want to work for five days per week.
