The lecture and the reading article both discuss four days work week option. While the reading states that four days work week is beneficial, the lecture refutes this, saying there are disadvantages for shortened work week alternative.
First of all, the reading claims that four days work week is better because it is beneficial to employees, companies, and to countries. Short work week will help to increase companies' profit margins. Companies can hire more staff without extra burden on payroll. However, the lecture argues that the shortened work week option will not bring any reduction in company costs. Hiring new work force and providing training to them is time consuming and not cost effective. In addition, companies will have to provide same healthcare benefits to every employee despite their number of working days per week.
Also, the reading claims, rested and alert employees will less likely to make mistakes that could cause companies significant amount of money. There will be few overburdened and error prone employees. Employees will have good work-life balance. They get to spend extra time with their loved ones, or to pursue their interests. But, the lecture disagrees with the claim, hiring of new work force will raise the management's expectations and they will expect the same amount of work will be done in four days that took five days to complete before. Employees will end up working overtime to match the expectations.
Lastly, the reading article argues that shortened work week will help countries to lower the unemployment rate. Workload will be shared between employees. For every five part-time employees, new part-time employee can be hired with 80 percent pay rate than full time staff. on the other hand, lecture refutes this claim by pointing out that quality of life for workers will decline as the job stability will get impacted. Part time staff will be at higher risk to lose their jobs during work force reduction. Also they will be overlooked at promotion and higher preference will be given to full-time employee simply because of his/her continuous availability.
