The text mentions that allowing the employees to work for four days a week would be more beneficial for both the company and employees as there are several advantages of working four days a week. However, the lecturer rebuts the passage for the following reasons.
Firstly, the speaker states that the company will have to bear the extra cost of hiring new employees. He tells that although passage mentions that the employees will work only for eighty percent of their salary but more money will be spend on the training of the new employees, in buying new computers and more office space will be required. Moreover the cost of the health benefits will remain same for all employees. So it is not in favour of company as described in the reading passage.
Second, lecturer says the employees will not get any advantage as told in the passage as the companies will prefer hiring employees who can work for five days a week. Thus, it not only risks their job stability but their chances of getting promotion will also reduce to a great extent. During recession such workers might even end up losing their job companies might not be interested in keeping such workers.
Last but not the least, speaker further points out that as it is not profitable for either groups, it would be wiser to ask the employees to do the same amount of work in four days in spite of five days. This will solve their purpose as well as it will not affect the company in any way. In addition the employees will also have the better opportunities to get promotion and there will more job stability. Hence, the speaker is not in favour of the passage.
