The lecturer cast doubts on the reading passages claim that workers able to choose between five day week and a four day week will benefit both the company and individuals. The lecturer states that this policy will have no positive effect on the company.
First of all, unlike how the reading passage claims that this policy will benefit the company economically with having more quality workers, the lecturer argues that this will actually force companies to pay more. Companies will have to pay more for training process, health insurance, additional office space, and computers.
Second, the lecturer refutes the reading passage statement that unemployment rate will fall with this policy. He claims that this policy will not enlarge job openings because companies will not choose a path that will cost more. Companies will rather start to find different options such as making their workers do overwork and pay the extra money. To make matters worse, companies might actually expect more from their employees to work as much as they would work five days during the four day period.
Finally, while the lecturer agrees that individuals will have more free time available he argues that this does not lead to increased quality of life. He poses that this policy carries a risk. Employees that chooses a four day schedule will have unstable positions because they might be first in line when the company needs to fire some people. Also, people who work five days will have a higher chance of being promoted which leaves the four days employees with low salary positions.
