The passage and the lecture are about employees in the United States that want to work four days a week instead of 5 days, 8 hours each. The reading mentioned three benefits that people have if the policy is applied. However, the lecturer criticizes each point stated in the article.
First, according to the reading the companies will increase their benefits because employees would feel more rested. Besides, this policy allows organizations to hire more workers without costing additional money because workers will be paid for 80 percent of their normal salary. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this because companies should spend both time and money as they would need to train new workers, buy new equipment and have more space. Besides, there would be additional costs because companies have to pay health medical benefits for these new people.
The second advantage mentioned in the article is the decrease of unemployment rate because companies will hire more employees. However, the professor states that hiring more workers is costly. Besides, he mentioned that companies can ask people to work overtime and also put pressure on them to complete a five-day work in four days. For that reason, companies might not add new jobs.
Finally, the passage stated that employees would have a better quality life if the policy is applied. The lecturer criticizes this by arguing that it could affect people's career and promotions. Moreover, their economic situation might be affected because they could lose their jobs during an economic recession.
In conclusion, the arguments exposed in the reading passage advocating for the new work policy were all refuted by the professor.
