TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The article states that it would be beneficial to lessen the work days from five to four per week even if employees income may become less, in the United States. The article provides three reasons for support. However, the professor holds a totally different view and refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading states that offer of four-day work per week with eighty percent of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole. The professor refutes this point by stating that companies will spend a lot more by adding a new worker. In fact, something such as training courses for a new workforce will rise up expenses. In addition, when we talk about health or medical benefits, there is no difference between a four-day worker and 5 workers. Therefore decreasing work hours or days would not be considered as a budget-savings plan. The professor adds, even with decreasing work days and employing new workers instead, some new expenses may appear like, needing new office rooms, new computers and etc.

Second, the article claims that shortened workweek will leave workers with more free hours. Workers would feel more rested and alerted and thus, there would fewer costly errors at work. Consequently, it would increase company's profit. However, the professor contends that hiring new workforce is costly itself because employers can increase work hours in order to compensate the lack of one workday which can make working hours more unpleasant.

Third, the reading avers that the life quality will be improved by following this plan since employees will be given extra time to spend with their families, pursue a private interest and etc. The lecture opposes this point by saying that, four-day employees are less likely to get promotions since company managers would prefer five-day employees to ensure continues coverage and supervision for the entire week.
