The lecture and the reading passage talks about the evidence to classify dinosaurs as endothermic animals. While the reading states three reasons to support that dinosaurs were endotherms, the lecture refutes the claim, saying that the reasons stated in the passage doesn't provide enough evidence to support the claim.
First of all, the reading claims that dinosaur fossils found in Polar region suggests dinosaurs were endotherms. Since animals who can maintain their internal body temperature can survive the harsh cold environment. But the lecture point it out that polar temperature today is much colder than it was before when dinosaurs were alive. Also, dinosaurs could have adapted the strategy of migration to escape the cold winter months or like reptiles hibernated during the winter.
Next the reading makes the argument that leg position and movement are connected with endothermy, which enables sustained physical activities like running. Dinosaurs and modern endotherms like birds have similar leg positions. The lecture counters this point by stating the underneath body legs' position supports the weight efficiently than side legs position. Also, large size of dinosaurs was an added surviving advantage.
Lastly, the reading article argues that there is a connection between endothermy and bone structure. Bones of endotherms have Haversian canals allows the animal to grow quicky. Rapid growth is a characteristic of endotherms. Fossils of dinosaurs indicates presence of Haversian canals. The lecture refutes the claim by pointing out that Haversian canals in endotherms show growth of bone rings along with thickening of bones. Periods of rapid growth and slow growth show non-endothermic trait, displayed by reptiles. Moreover, endothermic animals exhibit constant growth rate regardless of the surrounding cold temperature.
