The reading and the lecture both discuss the buildings found in Chaco Canyon. While the reading passage states that there are three theories that describes the main uses of these structures, The lecture casts doubt each of the theories by saying that they do not provide enough evidence for making this assertion.
First of all, the reading claims that one of the posible uses of the buildings found in Chaco Canyon was for residential purpouses. This theory mentions that one building was used for at least one hundred people. The professor opposes to this idea by saying that there were not enough fireplaces for supporting one hundred people in one house; Therefore, it is unlikely to be used as a residential house.
Secondly, The reading argues that the houses could be used as a store food supply .This is due to the fact that Arqueologist found traces of crops near the houses,so they assume that they could serve as a main storage for maize. The professor goes against that claim by saying that there were not containers in which maize could be stored, so it is imposible for crops to be saved without the use of any container.
Finally, The reading asserts that the structures could be used as a ceremonial center because Arqueologist found broken pots that could served as a recipent for meals that were part of a special ceremony. The professor counters this opinion by saying that in addion to the broken pots, Arqueologist found a variaty of contruction tools that indicate that this place were used as a trash can instead of a ceromonial spot.
