Both the reading and the lecture are about the practical use of hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine. The author of the article believes that this engine is more advantageous than the internal combustion engine. Anyway, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She believes that, even though some aspects of the reading might be true, the theory stated by the author is somewhat irrelevant when compared with scientific facts.
First, hydrogen is somehow a finite product when analyzing the extraction. The writer says that, unlike the petroleum, which existence will end soon, the hydrogen is present in many resources. However, the speaker mentions that its availability is reduced as it implies a complex process to extract it. It seems that this chemical substance is not found in pure form in the nature. Moreover, she indicates that preserving and storing it requires big efforts, since it should be kept in special recipients, under 233 Celsius degrees. This is a counter-point that contradicts the author' first argument regarding its easy availability.
Second, the pollution issue cause by automobiles, is not resolved by switching to hydrogen. This is due to the fact that the purification process for extracting pure liquid hydrogen, requires a lot of energy. In other words, even though coal and oil are not being used for car engine, producers will need petrol for obtaining the hydrogen. This is another strong standpoint that is in contradiction with the article.
Third, fuel engine-cell does not mean lower expenses, because their cost-production is pretty high. Although, it consumes less fuel, the price of such an engine is relatively high, because the engineers use platinum for building it. At present time, there is no other viable alternative, since the platinum is the only element that can support the chemical reaction inside the engine. This fact is directly contradicting the passage. In conclusion, the author and the lecture appear to be in disagreement regarding this topic.
