The reading and the lecture both discuss the replacement of the internal-combustion engine. While the reading states that fuel cell have several advantanges, the lecture casts doubt this idea by saying that it is too optimistic to say that fuel cell can replace the current engine.
First, The reading passage claims that internal combustion engines depends to much in petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel which are non renewable source of energy likely to waste. In addition the reading adds that fuel cell that use hydrogen can derived from different sources such as natural gas and water, so it makes them to be more attractive for consumers. However, the professor argues that even if water is easy to obtain, the production of hydrogen is difficult to process since it required a special treatment and storage that would need a new technology.
Second, the reading points out that fuel cell will solve that pollution’s problems related with the emision of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere since the only by-product of the hydrogen’s process is water. The professor counters this idea by saying that in fact the use of fuel cell increase that release of carbon dioxide to the enviroment because the hydrogen required a purification process that use energy that is main obtained from fossil fuel incresing the escape of this harmful gases.
Finally, the reading passage explains that fuel cell will be competitive in the future since the new engine based on hydrogen is more efficient that the internal combustion engines, as a result, this new engine use less energy to do the same distances. The professor refutes this idea by saying that the new engine has a disavantage which is that it uses a scarce and expensive metal for the combustion. Therefore, Instead of decreasing the cost, it will increase it. Moreover the proffesor addresses that there have been many unsuccessful experiments to replace this special metal.
