The reading states that the pollution theory for sea otter population declining is more likely to be true, and he provided three reasons of support. However, the lecture opposes this opinion and claims that the predation is the real reason behind the decline, and he provide three reasons of support.
First, the article avers that there are known reasons of pollution such as oil rigs and industrial chemical pollution which can affect the life span of the sea otters, However the professor contented that the pollution theory is weak, and the decline is because the predators and no dead sea otters were seen on the close shore.
Second, the author claims that other sea mammals are also declining and the whole ecosystem is affected because of the pollution. However, the lecture opposes this point by saying the predation theory is better explained here because the decline of whale caused by human hunting make the orcas to change their diet to hunt the small sea mammals like see otters and that caused the declining.
Third, the reading states that the uneven pattern of otter decline can be explained perfectly by the pollution hypothesis, because the decline was greater in the pollution areas. However, the lecture opposes this idea by saying that the uneven decline was because some areas were difficult to be accessed by huge predators and that is why sea otters stayed stable in that rocky shallow area, not because of the pollution.
