Sea otter declination is the topic of discussion in the lecture and paragraph. Paragraph states the reason of declination is environmental pollution. Whereas, lecture says predation is the major reason for the sea otter decline.
First reason paragraph states that water has known sources of oil rigs and chemical and sample also reveals level of chemical from the industries in water has been increased. Contrary to this opinion, lecture says that no one finds any dead bodies of sea otters if they are dying due to pollution. Lecture supports his point by adding that it is hard to find otters which shows that they have been attacked by the predators.
Secondly, paragraph shows that other mammals like seals and sea lions are also declining which means that entire ecosystem is affecting due to environmental pollution and they are not being attacked by orca whales. Whereas, lecture says that orca prefers large whales but whales essentially disappeared from the coastal region because of human hunters. Orca whales have to attack other small sea mammals like seals, sea lions and otters in the absence of large whales.
Thirdly, paragraph depicts that sea otter is declining in uneven pattern through the coast because of uneven ocean currents and environmental factors. While, lecture states that orca whales are very large in size which means these predators can not access some locations. Orca can not access shadow and rocky locations which shows uneven pattern in the declining of the sea otters.
