The article states that the value of literature about novels and plays are dwindling in society and provides three reasons for support for it. However, the lecturer explains that literature is not limited to the materials in novels and refutes the author's points.
First, the reading explains that no such thing encourages readers' minds as much as novels do. With the decline in the comprehension of this kind of text, the public is missing out on some beautiful views of literature. However, the professor states that literature is not exactly what the author claims it to be. Literature can dwell in history books and science books, and all these books could be as high-quality written like a decent novel. A reader's mind can be stimulated with a good science book as well as a play.
Second, the author claims that society, in general, is moving away from books, including novels and literature. The professor, however, contends that the public's depriving of one form of art does not necessarily mean missing out all the sources on the expression of emotions and ideas. Sources like a piece of good music or a high-quality movie still are valuable to many people. She says that this form of expression is more appealing to a modern audience.
Third and last, the reading avers that this ignorance toward literature had resulted in disregard toward the artists and authors as well. However, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that the blame in on the authors in this matter, rather than the readers. She feels this way because the authors these days are developing very hard-to-read content. The type of literature regarding meaning and structure is different from the past, and the readers from the then would also avoid reading books this complicated as well.
