TPO 11 – task 1
The professor discusses the issue of decline in book reading and refutes each of the author's points one by one. The information she presents is in direct contrast with the facts outlined in the reading passage.
First, the speaker makes the point that literature is not the only material providing intellectual stimulation. Scientific books, history books, etc. can offer high quality reading materials, which are just creative and intellectual as the literature. Indeed, if people do not read literature, it does not mean that they do not read good books. However, the article states that nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does.
Second, the lecturer asserts that culture, due to reading less literature, is not in decline. Movies and musics can be a good demonstration of cultures. According to the lecturer, the culture has changed and new expressions for the culture are introduced nowadays. On the other hand, the reading passage cites that trivial forms of entertainment, such as television and music video, have lowered the level of culture in general.
Third, the professor indicates that although there is less support for writers today than the earlier generations, the readers should not be blamed. Actually, it is the author's fault, not the readers. As the professor said, the modern literature, for the new generation, is very difficult to understand. Should the writers realized this fact, they might receive more supports. On the contrary, the reading passage concludes that the writing as well as reading of literature is likely to decline because of the poor standards of today's readers.
