The lecture talks about how Jane Austen’s authorized portrait story seems to be not convincing at all if compared with the arguments presented by the reading passage that believes she is the portrayed subject.
The reading says that decades after Jane Austen’s death, her family authorized the use of a portrait in an edition of her letters confirming that the girl who was being represented was Jane. However, the listening restates the fact that 70 years has passed when her family authorized it, so the main part of her relatives who actually met her were not there to assure it.
After that, the reading mentions how the portrayed face resembles the features contained in the sketch made by her sister Cassandra. On the other hand, the listening notices that the portrait could be of any of Jane’s relatives, once on that time she had a very extensive family mainly composed by teenagers, what could explain the resemble features passed down by relative to relative.
As last, besides the fact that the painting was unsigned and undated, the reading compares its style to Ozias Humphrey, a painter who Jane Austen’s family could possibly hire, and this period of Humphrey’s painting activity, namely, late 1780s and early 1790s, apparently matches with Jane’s youth. Nevertheless, the listening observes that the stamp indicated behind the portrait’s canvas has a name of a seller called Williams, who didn’t sell canvas in London during Humphrey’s painting activity and, consequently, Jane Austen’s youth.
