TPO-13 - Integrated Writing Task Private collectors have been selling and buying fossils, the petrified remains of ancient organisms, ever since the eighteenth century. In recent years, however, the sale of fossils, particularly of dinosaurs and other lar
The reading passage discusses that because rare and significant fossils are now being sold to private ownerships, it can negatively affect scientists and also the general public. The passage provides three reasons for support. However, the professor casts serious doubts on this claim by presenting some counter-arguments and examples. She apparently believes that none of these reasons are convincing enough and refutes all of them.
To begin with, the reading states that private collectors will not allow the public to view their collections, and thus this may decrease the public interest in fossils. The lecturer, meanwhile, makes the argument that these commercials are available for purchase for everyone and schools or other foundations who are interested in these fossils can buy them. She adds that this can open up a way for displaying these remains to the public.
Second, while the passage declares that scientists are the ones who probably lose their access to the fossils and cannot reveal new discoveries about extinct life forms, the professor rejects this claim and believes that all the fossils went on a precise identification before going to any commercial procedure. She comments that it is improbable to detect the fossil without any particular experiment being done by a scientific expert. Thus, scientists of this field will not miss anything.
Third, the lecture posits that private fossil owners often destroy valuable scientific evidence because of their little knowledge in this area. The lecturer, on the other hand, believes that if there are not any fossil discovery operations running by commercial fossil collectors, we do not have as many fossils as we have today. She says that the main crucial point is discovering the fossils not saving the scientific data.
