Both the reading and the lecturer talk about the trade of valuable fossils. Although the reading states some reasons about disadvantages of selling fossils to rich people, the lecturer finds them dubious and provides three main advantages that this action has.
First, the reading claims that private collections reduce the public's chance to see the valuable fossils. On the other hand, the lecturer explains that this way increases the public exposure to the fossils not only by displaying these rare fossils, but only low level institution such as schools can purchase and show these ancient organisms for the attendance.
Second, the reading states that trading fossils decrease the scientists' access to these fossils and they are more likely to miss out important discoveries. However, the lecture casts doubt to this idea and asserts that before putting any value on such findings, several analyses and tests should be applied by experts and scientists to verify their values and prices. Thus, no information would be missed out by them.
Third, the author points out that collectors who are unaware of the value of these fossils, would damage these fossils and ruin all possible evidence. In contrast, the lecturer suggests that these damage done by collectors are less than damages done while finding these discoveries. And if anything has destroyed, it was worthwhile. They may not have been discovered if there was no damage.
