The author describes that salvage logging provides lots of benefits for both a damaged forest after severe damage and the economy and brings three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the professor states that it may appear helpful after harsh disasters, but causes severe long-term damages, also it's economic benefits is questionable and she refutes each of the author's points with rational grounds.
First, the writer states that salvage logging removes the remains of dead trees and makes a lot of space for fresh growth which helps the forest areas recover from the disaster. Nevertheless, the speaker points out that salvage logging is not necessary and actually cannot provide a right condition for trees growth. In fact, the natural process is really helpful to enrich the soil and makes a suitable soil for trees to grow. Furthermore, salvage logging leads to nutrition deficiency in the soil for trees growth.
Second, according to the reading, by removing rotting wood, salvage logging helps eliminate the risk of insect infestation which positively affects the health of the forest. Conversely, the speaker brings up the idea that although salvage logging decreases the insect’s population, it is not really efficient. She takes the spruce bark beetle in Alaska which was a habitat for insects, but it was not damaging. Moreover, the dead trees are suitable habitats for birds that have an important contribution to the health of the forests in the long run. Admittedly, moving insects cause lots of damage to the forest.
Third, the author expresses that salvage logging has lots of economic profits. However, the lecturer posits that salvage logging provides small benefits which are not last very long. What's more, in severe situation helicopter should be used to displace the dead trees which is really an expensive operation. Besides, the relevant jobs are temporary. To be more specific, as outsiders have more experience in this field, the jobs are suitable for outsider rather than the local residents.
Therefore, the points in the reading do not make any sense.
