The reading passage contends that the cane toad is an enormous species in the United States, which was consciously transported to Australia in order to help farmers' crops by eating insects. But the population of cane toad is increasing drastically that threaten native animals and several methods are providing to stop their population. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the reading argues that the toad population could be controlled by the national fence. Indeed a fence can stop cane toad from moving and will prevent them to move other places in Australia. This method can control toad's population. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that fence will not be able to stop spreading population. In fact, there is various rivers and stream that carry eggs and toads to other places. So, with the presence of these streams, this idea could not be applicable and effective.
Furthermore, the reading holds the view that humans can be captured and destroy their population and government should allow them to do such work. On the contrary, the professor underlines the idea that this method might be successful but untrained individuals might destroy Australia native toad. So, this method might create the serious problem for the toad species in the area.
Finally, as set forth by the reading researchers have suggested spreading a virus to control cane population and this virus is designed in a way that it does not have any negative effects on the species. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that it is a bad idea and it might have deleterious effects on other species in the wildlife. Also, other species and reptiles are transported to other places for research especially in the US. So, this virus might convey to other cane toads in the US and devastate their population, which will suffer ecosystem in the long run.
