In this set of materials, the lecture and passage both are discussing about different methods that can be used to help the survival of Torreya plants. The reading provides three methods that can be incorporated to increase the survival of Torreya tree. However, the lecturer thinks these ideas are not satisfactory.
First of all, the lecture states that the north Florida region no longer have the micro climate. The coolest and wetter areas are suffered due to global warming. The considerable increase in temperature has consequently, dried the wetlands in that region. This has resulted in unsuitable climatic conditions for the growth of Torreya tree. This is highly contrast to what is mentioned in reading material. It states that regrowing Torreya tree in it's original location can be useful in prevention of extinction of Torreya tree.
Secondly, another option that is discussed in text is to establish the Torreya tree in new location. The speaker disagrees with this suggestion. She mentions that the results of planting Torreya tree in new place can not be predicted. It can pose danger to the existing species of that location. She explained this by giving example of black locus plant, which was migrated to new location, killed the other endangered species of it's new location.
Finally, The orator argues that research centers are not ideal place for the preservation of Torreya species. The species cannot survive for long. This is because, the research centers do not have enough space to have massive amount of plants, so that they will be genetically diverse which is necessary to protect them from diseases. This is in opposition to the proposal provided by the passage. The writer supports the view that the plants will definately survive in research centers and will also aide in research.
