The passage asserts that the government accepts a policy which was "let it burn" and it was about letting fire to carry on until it stops by itself and it is not necessary for people to do any action. In reading passage this policy seems ridiculous and harms our environment for several reasons; however, the professor says that this is not a bad idea and not only it did not have bad effects on the surrounding area but also it helped it in many ways.
Firstly, the passage claims that it affected the forest vegetation and burn almost 33% of the plants of the national park and now it looks like devastated wasteland; nevertheless, the lecturer believes that this fire helped that areas plants to rise in a better way because it burned some tall trees which did not let other small plants to be affected by sunlight and absorb its mineral and radiations. furthermore, these open lands cause other plants to grow in that place which had not grown in the past.
Secondly, the passage mentions that this fire harmed a food chain by killing some small species which could not escape and also killed some big animals like deers and elks, in contrast, professor has another opinion and she says this phenomenon made that area better environment for new species like rabbit and hares and due to presence of these animals their preditors came there and helped new food chains to establish.
Finally, in the reading the writer claim that this incident has frightened tourists to come and visit the Yellowstone national park then it affected small businesses that earn money from visitors; the speaker, However, told students that this fire happened one time and has not happened again in that park to effect on visitors number and it was because of driness and heavy winds in that year. also, she mentions tourists came to that area the year after that, so we can not say this fire has reduced the park's visitors.
