TPO-20 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, it had been common practice since the late 1960s no to suppress natural forest fires. The “let it burn” policy assumed that forest fire would burn themselves out quickly, without causing much dama

The article states that replacing " let it burn" policy with a policy of turn off the forest fires since it has a detrimental effect over huge areas and he provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the fire is a nature process of the ecological cycle not only destructive but also creative and he refutes all the author's reasons.

First, Yellowstone fires caused a huge damage to park's tree and vegetation, trees blackened from flames and smoke, and small plants also completely burned. The professor refutes this point, he states that vegetation scorched areas colonized by new plants, thus, the Yellowstone plants became more diverse. the areas of destroyed trees were taken for growing small plant which needs sunshade areas or growing plants which need exposing to high temperature.

Second, the park wild field was affected also, large animal as deer, and elk escape the fire. Many small species were unable to escape which leads destruction of the habitats and distribution of the food chain would make it is forbidden for the animal to return to survive. However, the professor says that the fire provides a new opportunity since small plants replaced the fired trees, provides ideal habitat for small animals to survive, and appear of some predators which depend on them for food that makes food chain become stronger.

Third, the reading claims that the fires unmask the value of the park as tourist visitors which had a negative impact on the local economy. Fires damaged several thousand acres of the park, as the result, the tourists decided to stay away from the park. The professor says that the claim is problematic; he explains that the fire is not happening every year. In 1988 there are many combination factors that lead to the fire such as, strong wind, and heavy rain. Fires were not be seen since 1988, therefore, it will not affect on the visitation of the tourists.
