TPO-20 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, it had been common practice since the late 1960s no to suppress natural forest fires. The “let it burn” policy assumed that forest fire would burn themselves out quickly, without causing much dama

The passage and lecture both discuss three statements around a policy, which is dubbed "let it burn", and its effectiveness. The reading claims that "let it burn" policy has three significant damages and it can supersede with a new instruction to suppress forest fire as soon as possible. In contrast, the lecture explains that "let it burn" policy is not only destructive but also creative and demonstrates some counterarguments.

Firstly, the passage puts out that the forest fire in the summer of 1988 caused a huge damage to the vegetation and also remained behind a wasteland. The lecturer refutes this and mentions that the fire provided a new opportunity for plants to colonize and grow. For instance, in the scorch areas, the trees were replaced with the new smaller plants required open and unshaded space to grow. Plus, because of the high temperature some seeds gained the chance to germinate and become new plants.

Secondly, the text points that Yellowstone fire had negative effects on the wildlife and especially small animals. However, the professor says that the fire and new vegetations created a new habitant for other small animals such as hares and rabbits, and as a consequence their predators. Thus, the food chains became stronger compared to the past.

Thirdly, the article posits that Yellowstone fire harm tourist attraction, and so the local economy. The speaker opposes this and reminds that the forest fire can harm tourism if it happens every year. In fact, several factors are needed for beginning of a massive fire including low rainfall and strong winds. But, they are no any fire since 1988 in Yellowstone, and hence all visitors came back to the park next year.
