The lecturer challenges the topic proposed in the reading that planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits. And she thinks that there are series of problems and costs for planting genetically modified trees.
First, the article indicates that genetically modified trees are designed to be hardier than nature trees, so they are more likely to survive than unmodified couterparts. However, the professor points out that though being resistant to a kind of disease cannot prove their survival. Because unmodified trees are genetically diverse, though most of them would died due to some viruses, some individuals would survive. By contrast, genetically modified trees are genetically uniform, once they are not resistant to an unique virus, they would all died. Thus they are likely to be wiped out due to some environmental changes.
Second, the passage supposes that genetically modified trees promises to bring a number of economic benefits to those who grow them. But the lecturer supports that there are some hiden costs. Farmers cannot plant them for free, so they have to pay for the seeds to the company. Thus farmers should cost much money to the company for every plant.
Third, the essay mentions that the use of genetically modified trees can prevent overexploitation of wild trees. Nevertheless, the lecturer presumes that genetically modified trees are growing more aggresively than unmodified trees, which represents that they would compete some resources with their unmodified couterparts such as water and soil. Hence, using genetically modified trees cannot save the endangered native trees.
