The article states that the ethanol is a good alternative for gasoline and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the three reasons are not convincing, the merits of using the ethanol, and he refutes the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that using of ethanol is not the good way to solve the most global environmental problem such as the global warming since it emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that leads trap the heat in the atmosphere. The professor refutes this point, he states that increase the use of ethanol will not add to the global warming. It is true that it emits carbon dioxide, ethanol produced from the plants as corn, so, the growing process of the plants will counteract the carbon dioxide emitted since it absorbs the carbon dioxide through the growing process.
Second, the article claims the production of a high amount of ethanol will decrease the amount of plants such as corn which is used to feed many animals such as chicken at the same time is used for produce ethanol that leads to decrease the amount of food source for animals. However, the professor says that large-scale production of ethanol will not reduce the amount of food source for animals since the ethanol can be produced from cellulose which is the cell of the plant part that not be eaten by animals, therefore, the amount of animal food will not decrease.
The third, the reading claims that there is no difference in the prices of gasoline and ethanol because of the help of the government to the ethanol producer. The professor says that this claim is problematic; he explains that there is competition between the prices of the ethanol and gasoline. If the people start buying the ethanol, the price of ethanol will decrease to 40 percent, and also the government supports the ethanol producer to make the price of ethanol cheaper.
