The reading and the lecture are about the use of Ethanol fuel, taken from sources such as plants and cane sugar, instead of gasoline. The author believes that there are several negative reasons to take into consideration before the replacement. The professor brings into the question the claims made in the article. He considers that some reasons from the passage could be erroneous and unconvincing, and also with this new fuel the advantages outweigh the drawbacks.
First, the author states that the environmental problems will follow going on in the world, because Carbon dioxide –a chemical released by ethanol fuel- will cause the heat of the atmosphere, therefore there are no green solutions. The professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that this gas will not cause environmental problems, on the other hand, it will counteract the CO2 emissions alleviating the air from it, because plants like corn or sugar cane absorb it, and then remove it from the atmosphere.
Second, the author comes up with the idea that the large production of ethanol will have some consequences in plants. It is mentioned that animals such as cows and chickens will undergo low food sources without the main corn, and if it were produced the amount of this fuel in order to satisfy 10% of the cars, this would reduce in 60% these corn plants. However, the professor argues that this measure will not reduce corn, because there is another called cellulose which is made by animals, so, more places to get this material will be available.
Finally, the author contends that the ethanol will be so expensive in years after his coming because of the tax subsidies, which will increase due to the fact that government will stop supporting producers, because it has been paying 11B dollars for around 30 years, and it may not pay more. The professor, on the other hand, posits that the ethanol’s price will actually compete with gasoline’s price, because as the production of ethanol increases the price decreases, so he estimates that in next years the production will be multiplied in three and the price will go down in 40%.
