The speaker refutes the passage completely. He says that the theory presented in the passage for the declining population of Cedar trees is not true. He challenges the points mentioned in passage by giving following reasons.
First, the professor tells that the beetle only attacks weak tress that are already damaged and are about to die, they are not capable of causing any harm to healthy adult tree. The reason behind this is the Cedar trees have a poisonous chemical which makes them resistant to Beetle insect and thus they are not affected by beetle insect as suggested in the passage.
Second, the lecturer clears the point said in passage that these trees are reducing because of the bear’s assault. He states that the population of trees is indeed reducing all over the northern region that consists of mainland and islands. However, bears are confined only to mainland. Thus, this theory is not able to explain the reason of decreasing population of trees in island as well.
Third, the lecturer further rebuts the passage by saying that the “Frost damage” point is also not valid. He suggests that although, the temperature on the higher elevation is extremely cold but the temperature on the lower elevation is warm and according to the evidences the number of trees dying on the lower elevation is more in reality. Hence, as per the lecture the last point in the passage is also not convincing.
