The reading states that the vessels found in Iraq were ancient electric batteries and can even produce a small electric current when filled with some liquids. The passage adds that it is improbable that the vessels were used as electric batteries in ancient times, and provides three reasons to support the claim. The professor, however, casts serious doubts on this issue and believes that none of these reasons are convincing enough to disregard the presence of the batteries in ancient time.
First, the reading passage posits that as there is no evidence that any metal wires were located near vessels, they could not be used as batteries. Meanwhile, the lecturer refutes this claim by saying that vessels were found by local people and there might be some extra things like wire around them. In fact, they might have found some extra stuff more than vessels, but since they are not specialists, they could have ignored these important pieces in the site or may throw them away.
Second, while the reading claims that vessels might have been used for holding scrolls of sacred texts like copper cylinders discovered in the ruins of Seleucia, the professor says that they could be first designed with the aim of holding scrolls. He comments that ancient people might have then found that if they add Iron and other necessary things, they may be able to produce electricity. Thus, the vessels could be used for one purpose, but another usage might have been found after a while.
Third, in contrast to the reading passage's statement which declares that since there were no devices to work with electricity, the vessels would have been entirely useless appliances, the lecturer disagrees and thinks differently. He believes that they might be used as a powerful tool to give people a wild shock when they touch it, and also they might use it as a magical power to heal people. Therefore, not only could these vessels stimulate the muscles to relieve stress but also they might have been considered as a practical tool for ancient doctors.
