TPO 26 - The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot be stopped and that it poses a serious threat to freshwater fish populations in all of North America.
The reading passage and lecture have conflicting opinions about whether the zebra mussel population causes harm to local fish in all of North America. The author strongly postulates that this zebra mussel which originates from Eastern Europe are potentially noxious to the native fish population. On the other hand, the listening adamantly delineates that there are plenty of ways to control its population.
First and foremost, according to the author of the excerpt, their invasion is too powerful to manage because the ships extensively scatter these animals throughout the world, so it is only matters of time to its population prevail in North America. Nonetheless, the lecturer offsets these points by declaring that in the past, people did not know why it became widespread. In addition to this, these shellfish were usually dispersed by sailors who empty their ships in freshwater. However, now if they can empty their ships in ocean water, the zebra mussel population will not be carried on this area again.
Secondly, the professor further asserts that only at the beginning of their introduction, they have not any predators. Nevertheless, after for a while, the birds will notice that the new prey has arrived in their terrestrial. Therefore, they will easily change their habitat to prey on these shellfish. These claims refute the writer's implications about once the zebra mussel spreads out, they will become dominant on this are because their reproduction is high and they have no predators.
The text lastly insists that it may create a decrease in the overall fish population because it eats a substantial amount of plankton which are the main food for fishes. The speaker in the lecture counters these indications by pointing out that even though it is true that it will affect on fishes' numbers which feed mainly plankton, it may have a positive influence on fishes which live near the bottom of streams and lakes. Since they generate muscles which are essential nutrition to those fishes near beaches.
