Both author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the main factors which led to the Little Ice Age. While the reading part lists some factors as the possible reasons for this incident, the professor counters these specific points. Based on the instructor's evidence, these factors are assumed to be accountable of this phenomenon for the sake of the out of date information; but, current information challenges the accuracy of these factors.
First of all, the article mentions to the disrupting of ocean currents as the feasible cause of this event; on the contrary, the lecturer casts doubt on the validity of this claim. As he asserts the cooling effect of Gulf Stream could be responsible for the cold weather in the Europe and America. However, the weather of southern hemisphere was cold too, which the Gulf Stream could not lead to it. Thus, this factor does not support this evident cogently.
Next, meanwhile, the text posits that the dark cloud released by the volcanic eruption could be the reason of this incident, the professor refutes this claim. As he states although the dark cloud can lead to the cold weather, it should be sufficient and strong enough to cause this action. Besides, the dark cloud has visual effects. For instance, it leads to the colorful sunset or the grey snowfall. Since there is no any report of these visual alterations on that period, the dark cloud was not strong enough to lead this event.
Finally, the passage assumes that the decrement of people populations could impact it indirectly, inasmuch as based on this decline the forests were expanded and the volume of greenhouse gas was decreased. On the contrary, based on the professor assertion, the decrement of populations moved back to its previous position in a very short span; in addition, they started to cut down the trees just like past time. As a result, there was no time for the expansion of the forests and the decrement of the greenhouse gas.
