TPO 32- Starting in the 1960s and continuing until the 1980s, sailors in Russian submarines patrolling the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean would occasionally hear strange sounds. These underwater noises reminded the submarine crews of frog croaks, so they called the sounds "quackers" (from the Russian word for frog sounds). The sources of the sound seemed to be moving with great speed and agility; however, the submarines' sonar (a method of detecting objects underwater) was unable to detect any solid moving objects in the area. There are several theories about what might have caused the odd sounds.
The reading and lecture are both about strange noises heard underwater in North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. The author of the reading believes the sounds are caused by three reasons. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that noises are coming from Orca whales during their courting rituals. The article notes that Orca lives in the area where submarines detects the strange noises. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that sound that the submarine picked up are coming from the Orca are plausible at first. Furthermore, she argues that in that specific area the population of the whale are at large. In addition, they live near the surface of the water and the submarine route was deep under water and it is impossible that Orca are swimming deep underwater.
Secondly, the author contends that the sound comes from giant squid. The article establishes that squids are undetectable by the sonar system in the submarine because of their genetic make up, but it is possible that they can emit sounds. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that submarine can detect quackers on year 1960 and disappear in 1980s and it is not plausible to hearing the sound the squid is emitting then suddenly disappears 20 years later. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that squid live in the ocean where the submarine are deployed and currently still migrates there.
Finally, the author states that the submarines are getting signals from other submarine surveying secretly the area. The article denotes that the foreign submarine used technology where they can be undetected by other vessel. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the secret submarine move around and change direction quickly. She puts forth the idea that there are no submarine that are capable of moving fast and change direction quickly. Moreover, up to this date there are no technological advancement that makes submarine that has quiet engine and can move fast.
