Although the author argues three main theories for the extinction of a huge marine mammal called Steller's sea cow in the marine environment of Bering Island near the coast of Siberia in 1768, the professor finds them dubious and brings up three counter claims to refute them all. Actually, the professor claims these reasons are not real and for each reason, there is a critic.
Firstly, the author takes the view that the reason of extinction is overhunting by native Siberian people. However, the professor gainsays this idea and believes that the size of this mammals are too huge, about nine meters long with the weight of virtually ten tones that cannot be hunted easily. In addition, the small number of native Siberian lived in a small village that one of these sea cows was enough to feed them all. Thus, the professor is skeptical about why they should have hunted them all.
Furthermore, the author argues that another reason for their extinction would be disruption in ecological condition which affected on their food resources such as kelps, a type of sea vegetation. The professor, on the other hand, asserts that if the condition and their ecosystem underwent to sever problems, it would have happened for almost all species not just for sea cows. Moreover, if kelps were extinct, there would have been myriad of food resources of other fish to feed on them.
Eventually, the author claims that another main reason of their extinction is arrival of European fur traders who hunted those using special weapons during 1741 to 1768. Conversely, the professor states that this extinction took place soon after the European arrival to Siberia. Besides, there are evidences that show the extinction had begun before their presence in those areas. So, they are not responsible for this extinction even though they might hunted some of them.
