TPO 34 Writing Integrated task
A huge marine mammal, known as Steller’s sea cow, once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see one. In 1768 the animal became extinct. The reasons for the extinction are not clear. Here are three theories about the main cause of extinction.
The reading discusses three theories about why Stellar's sea cow, a massive marine mammal, became extinct in 1768. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on each theory provided by the reading.
First, the author argues that the extinction of sea cows may have taken place as a result of overhunting by native people of Siberia. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that since these marine creatures are extremely weighty and large, a limited number of them were enough to supply the needs of the village's population for a couple of months. In other words, the village's population was not that large to cause much population loss of sea cows as a result of hunting.
Moreover, the reading passage holds the view that the shortage of the main source of sea cows' food, kelp, caused by ecosystem disturbances may account for their extinction. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that if such ecosystem disturbances had occurred, their detrimental consequences would have been applied to other marine animals like whales. But, there were no reports indicating whales' population decline. Therefore, sea cows couldn't have been annihilated due to food shortage.
Finally, the reading asserts that hunting by European fur traders may have caused a large number of sea cows' death. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that when European traders arrived at the island, the sea cows' population had already declined. Considering the fact that their population was large hundreds of years ago, the main reason which had brought about such a dramatic decrease in their population must have happened long before Europeans arrived there. Therefore, the European traders couldn't be considered as the main reason for the sea cows' extinction.
