The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the possible of maintain human presence in other planet beside Earth, and sustains the impossibility to do it in Venus. The article provides extensive information and some reasons for support. However, the lecturer casts doubts on this claim, and opposes to each of the reasons provided by the reading passage.
Firs of all, the reading passage states that the high pressure of Venus'surface is so high that would crash any spacecraft that could land on the planet in hours. Thus, it would be impossible to maintain a station necessary to live in. The lecturer challenge this point by suggesting the implementation of an air station, like a balloon type structure, above in the higher levels of the atmosphere. Therefore, the pressure in these high levels would be less than on the surface, and similar as on the surface of the Earth.
Secondly, the reading passage argues that the lack of water and oxygen would be another impediment for human life on Venus. Bringing water and oxygen from Earth would be impractical and unsubstantial with the project of living in this planet. On the other hand, the lecturer explains that the elements presents in Venus' atmosphere, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulphuric acid, could allow the production of water and oxygen necessary. Again, the reading passage fails to sustain this point after the lecture refutation.
Finally, the reading passage points out the lack of sunlight on the planet's surface because of the thick layer of clouds in the atmosphere, as another reason for why the human life would be impossible to maintain in Venus. On the opposite, the lecturer reinforces the idea of an air station above the thick layers of clouds that could obstruct the sunlight. Additionally, the clouds below reflecting the sunlight would reinforce this source of light. Consequently, the sunlight necessary to produce energy on the solar panels on the station would be enough.
