The topic is about the negative impact the glass building will have on the birds. The reading passage introduces three solutions to prevent injuries to birds. However, the lecturer thinks none of the solutions will work effectively.
To begin with, the reading passage claims that one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction will reduce the injuries to birds. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that the one-way glass is as bad as the regular glass, as it will reflect just like a mirror. Bird cannot understand a mirror, so they will think it still is sky and trees and fly directly towards it.
The second solution presented in the reading passage is to have regular window glass painted colorful lines or designs to warn the bird. The lecturer, however, indicates that the bird will preserve the area on the glass where is unpainted as the open hole, and try to fly through it. Therefore, the unpainted area of the glass need to be very small to prevent the bird flying to it. In this way, the room inside will be too dark for people.
Thirdly, according to the reading passage, the bird has a natural ability to sense magnetic fields, which could be created to guide birds away from the building. In contrast, the lecturer disproves this point by saying that the bird use the ability to sense magnetic field only when they travel very long distances. For short trips, they use eyes and brightness of light to navigate.
