The reading and lecture are both discussing the ways to protect birds from the glass which is favored building material for modern architecture. Whereas the author of the reading states that though glass is favored building material for modern architecture it is very dangerous for birds. He says that birds are unable to find the difference between the glass and the open air and thus they are harmed by the glass. The author provides various solution which can be used to prevent birds from injuries. The lecturer suggest that the solutions provided by the author is not very useful and provides reason for each of the solution for not being beneficial to protect birds. The lecturer cast doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, the first solution provided by the author is one-way glass. The author mentions that as only occupants of the building as see outside and birds cannot see through it, they will consider it as a barrier can will not try to go through it. The lecturer disputes this point. He says that, the one way glass outside will reflect like a mirror and birds don't understand mirror. Furthermore he states that, if they see a reflection of a sky or tree in the mirror they feel that it is actually the sky or tree and will try to come closer to it and will thus harm themselves.
Secondly, the reading states that the second solution is colorful design. The glass can be painted with thin stripes , people can see outside through the stripes but birds would see the stripes and would not try to fly through it.Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that birds would see the openings between the stripes as a hole and would try to fly through it. In addition he points out that, if they want to implement this design than they would have to paint thick strips and keep small spaces between the strips but the room would appear dark in that case.
Finally, the reading the provides third solution which is magnetic field .On the other hand, the lecturer believes that bird uses magnetic filed only when they travel a long distance , for short distance they uses their. He thinks that the idea of magnetic field will not be of any help to prevent birds from injuries.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about how to prevent birds from injuries through glass, the three main points made in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
