In the lecture, the professor discusses why none of the three theories presented in the text on the life style of agnostids are convincing.
To begin with, the reading claims that agnostids can be swimmers that feed on animals according to other kinds of primitive arthropods. Nonetheless, the speaker refutes this by saying that free-swimming animals typically have advanced eyes, which were small or even lacked on agnostids. What is more, there is no evidence of other sensory systems in their fossils, either. Thus, it is unlikely that agnostids had the ability to swim in water.
Next, whilst the second theory in the passage argues that agnostids may have lived on the seafloor, because other species of arthropods lived that way, the lecturer points out that fossils of seafloor inhabitants usually locate at a restricted area due to limited locomotive ability. In contrast, fossils of agnostids is distributed in large areas, making them unlikely to lived on the seafloor.
Finally, the population of parasites are usually small, as the instructor asserts, because large population would have adverse effects on the host organism. Hence, the large amount of agnostid fossils discovered indicates that they could not be parasites, making the last conjecture in the reading material that agnostids survived just like other arthropod parasites inconclusive.
