In the reading, the author presents some arguments that cast doubt on the theory which states bees has existed on Earth from 200 million years ago. This theory is supported by the excavation of very old fossil structures which is similar to bee nests. However, finding all the arguments unconvincing and implausible, the lecturer repudiates the author's claim and corroborates the theory by presenting some evidences.
At first, the author argues that no fossils of actual is found that its date was before 100 million years ago. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although it is ture that no fossils remains of bees were found from that time, it is because in the time trees with resin were rare. Owing to the fact that bees could be preserved in resins secreted by trees and this kind of trees was scarce in that time or the condition was not suitable, the bees did not have a chance to be preserved.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the absence of flowering plant which are exclusively food supply of bees in that time is another reason that states bees could not have existed 200 million years ago. That being said, the lecturer disputes it by clarifying the fact that those early bees may have been fed on non-flowering plants such as fern or pine trees. After appearation of flowering plants, bees probably adapted to this kind of plant and after that they maintained their close association.
Finally, the author draws attention to the structures that are bereft of some details necessary for being the nests of bees as the last point in refuting the theory. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that there are some chemical evidence which validates the theory. For example, those early bees sue some water proofing material in order isolate their nest from water that modern bees used them too.
