When it comes to how to manage universities' budgets, people in general believe that universities are supposed to renovate old buildings or renewing facilities in order to attract new students. On the other hand, quite a few people argue that schools should use money for improving faculties. Although spending money on infrastructure and physical plant certainly is a feasible way to attract students, investing in keeping the faculty satisfied is more significant.
To begin with, despite the fact that enhancing the quality of facilities or physical plants does help to satisfy students with a more enjoyable and appealing environment for learning, improving the teaching quality of professors is more crucial not only for attracting new students, but also for existed students and alumni. Many schools spent budgets on renovating buildings, buying latest technology equipment or planting more trees around the campus; however, students' academic performance were still not improved. Only by improving the quality of faculties can students have excellent performance in academy; hence, a university could consequently be best known for outstanding school. Therefore, investing in faculties make school become more popular.
Moreover, making faculties satisfied prevents them from changing jobs. It is common for workers to consider what benefits and costs are in choosing career. It is also usual for them to compare benefits and costs. Do benefits outweigh costs in the job? Or does this job require to pay more cons than pros? As a result, if school stop satisfying professors, professors will think that one benefit diminishes, and one drawback increases. They start to harbor thoughts of changing jobs. Then they compare benefits of working in university to having jobs in private firms. Clearly spending extra profits to hire professional researchers is an investment that private firms are willing to do, which in contrast schools are reluctant to invest. Thus, if school stop keeping faculties satisfied, they consider changing career for acquiring more profits.
Accordingly, since professors are essential of attracting students, schools should not hesitate to invest their budgets in making faculties more contented rather than in infrastructure and physical plant.
