TPO-47 - Integrated Writing Task Pterosaurs were an ancient group of winged reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs. Many pterosaurs were very large, some as large as a giraffe and with a wingspan of over 12 meters. Paleontologists have long wondered

In the passage, there are several arguments made against the powered flight of Pterosaurs. But, the lecturer provides some evidence which proves these arguments false.

In the beginning, the passage claims that the Pterosaurs are cold blooded animals. Cold blooded animals typically have a slow metabolism and are unable to produce a lot of energy. The lecturer refuses this and argues that the Pterosaurs have a dense hair-like covering which indicates that they were warm-blooded. The hair-like covering is mainly for maintaining high blood body temperature in a colder atmosphere.

Next, the passage states that the Pterosaurs were as large as a giraffe were probably so heavy they would not have been able to flap their wings fast enough to stay aloft for any length of time. But, the lecturer says that the Pterosaurs had aeronautical features. Their bones were hollow so that weight would be low. So, they would be able to fly.

Finally, from fozziled bones that Pterosaurs had too small legs and weak to allow them to run fast and jump high enough to launch themselves into the air. On the contrary, the lecturer opines that birds only use two legs for jump high but Pterosaurs uses four legs which allow them to run fast and jump higher.

To conclude, according to the passage Pterosaurs would be able to fly because of their body structure and weight. But, the lecturer provides facts that show that they would able to fly.
