The reading claims that humpback whales help from stars to navigate for searching food and mating and provides three reasons to support its approach. However, the lecturer finds all ideas which have been mentioned by the reading dubious and presents some evidences to refute them all.
At first place, the author argues that this kind of animal has a cognitive ability with high degree that can use stars for their navigation. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the idea that they are not intelligent if use stars for finding way. Other animals such as birds and dogs use stars for this purpose, but their cognitive ability is average. They can able to use stars and do not relate to cognitive. They have this ability when they born. So there is not any connection between cognitive ability and navigation by stars.
Furthermore, the reading passage asserts that humpback whales travel a long distance in straight lines. Others animals can do this job by some external objects or forces, but they can not use external mark in the open ocean. So they should rely on stars as external signs that lead them to approach their destination. Conversely, the professor underlines the fact that they must use external objects or forces for finding their way in straight lines. They have a bio magnetite that can scene the earth's magnetic field. So they are sensitive to the earth field and can understand it. They orient their ways by this magnetic field.
Finally, the reading holds the view that they float straight up for a period of the time and look like that they are watching the stars. This behavior is known as spy-hopping and it is scarce between other marine animals. Therefore, they can see the stars and help them to find their way. On the contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that they do not look at stars while their heads above the sea level. Some other animals such as sharks have this behavior and they use it for hunting. Also humpback whales do this activity in day that there is not any stars in the sky. So according to above mentioned, the spy-hopping is only pure speculation about this topic.
